The Arizona racetrack of Rillito, the first quarter horse track in USA, is a 5 furlong track and was opened on 1st November 1953, operating for 14 years. A form of racing had taken place at Rillito Park since 1943, but the more formal, pari-mutuel period began ten years later. The 5 furlong oval track, with later chutes of 2 ½ furlongs and 4 furlongs, shared a 201 metre home straight, was the brainchild of 2 former University of Arizona students, Ruken Jelks and Mel Haskell. On 20th November 1967 the track was renamed Tucson Turf Club when the course was adapted to enable thoroughbred racing to be staged. On 21st November 1971 the track reverted to Rillito Park, while in 1996 Rillito Park was recognized by the American Quarter Horse Associations American Quarter Horse Foundation as a Historical Marker. The principal race at the track is the Hasta La Vista Stakes over 15 furlongs, won in 2011 by Eyeameasy, in 2013 by Flexiplus and in 2014 by Mambo Man. Another feature race is the El Moro de Cumpas Stakes won in 2011 by Monarca Dash. |
